The Self-Improvement Killer – Procrastination

Procrastination : the act of procrastinating; putting off or
delaying or deferring an action to a later time. We have all
been guilty of this at one time or another. When it comes to
self improvement programs, it is a killer. If you are a great
procrastinator then the first improvement you need to make is to
stop procrastinating and get moving!

Why do people procrastinate? I’m sure there are a million
reasons but what it really comes down to is self esteem and self
worth. Going back to our last issue, do you remember the two
students? One was a great speller and the other was bad. The
good speller received positive feedback from himself and his
peers, boosting his self-confidence, self-esteem, and his self
worth.

Now let’s move forward in his life to adulthood. He is now 30
years old, working at a job he doesn’t like, not making enough
money, never been married, and no children. What happened? In
this case, when he was younger, he was good at everything but
when he entered the real world, nobody was there to give him the
praise and positive feedback that boosted his self-esteem.

He learned to complain about his job from unhappy co-workers.
When he did an exceptional job, he was ridiculed by his
co-workers and so called friends. He didn’t like that so he
stopped trying. His self-talk had changed from “I am good at so
many things!” and “I can do anything!” to “If I do too well,
nobody will like me” and “It doesn’t matter how I do”.

When we stop caring, it becomes real easy to put things off,
like looking for a job that makes us happy, or finding someone
to spend our lives with and have children which can be very
fulfilling. It can get even worse to the point of letting your
appearance go, living in a dirty house, driving a car that is
falling apart. You keep telling yourself “I will get around to
it. Besides nobody cares what I look like so why bother?”

This doesn’t just happen at work. It can happen in every area of
your life! With friends, in sports, personal relationships, and
other social situations. Over the years we take in comments from
everyone we come in contact with, the good and the bad. When we
hear the same thing enough times we start to believe it and we
start telling ourselves the same thing which reinforces the
thought.

This just happens to be the basis of subliminal programming!
Only we use positive affirmations repeated thousands of times in
a short period to speed up the process of change. Subliminal
messages are usually masked by music or nature sounds to help
the listener relax while your subconscious mind is busy
listening to the positive life changing messages.   1   2
